As many of you know, I tend to get into decor trends way late. Usually by the time they're not cool anymore, I like them. It's my thing. I'm pretty sure the barn door trend is here to stay though and I've been trying to figure out where I could make one work in our house for a good year now. I have a couple ideas in mind but I'd have to make some additional changes first.

A few months ago a friend of mine found a beautiful barn door ready-made at Home Depot and I was intrigued. I saw this one at Lowe's the other day:

As I mentioned when I shared it on social media -- the price is hard to swallow when a sliding door can be built fairly inexpensively. BUT I certainly know that sometimes it sure is nice to just buy something and not make it! ;)

It's great that you can get one so easily now! If you do a search on Craigslist you can usually find a local resource as well. But if you're interested in making your own I've gathered a few great resources for you!

This is one of those projects that seems daunting but is really a simple project -- you'll need a saw and a drill or nail gun to make the door. The only consistent problem I hear is hanging the door hardware -- it sounds like that is more difficult than making the door!

Jenna Sue shared how to make two versions of a barn door:

I like both options and love the double doors!

My friend Traci shared how they made a barn door for their mud room:

I love the pretty "X" design on the bottom!

If you love the look of barn doors but don't have a good spot for one, you can always just lean it against a wall:

Keep in mind you can use any door too -- and it doesn't have to be quite so rustic. Christina repurposed a hollow core door for her kitchen:

I love that! The new trim completely updates it!

I love this more modern take on the sliding door:

So beautiful! You can find single doors with a lot of character at your local Habitat Restore and online. Your options are endless!

Rachel took a paneled door and repurposed it into a sliding door:

That pretty glass door knob completes it!

I LOVE that Jaime took this trend and created furniture with the same look:

She includes detailed plans for this piece -- wouldn't that be lovely as a buffet in a kitchen or dining room?

You can find the sliding hardware at hardware stores now but I think the best selection is on Amazon. The prices are great -- years ago it seemed they were a lot more.

This traditional sliding barn door hardware is $60:

And this one is only $50!:

This one is $50 too and I love the unique design

That's the hardware my friend used on a white door and it's so pretty.

The more modern versions are harder to come by and seem to be a little more expensive. This stainless steel sliding hardware is $80:

I love the look, whether it's modern or more traditional! And a sliding door gives you more useable space in a room too -- when a door doesn't swing out into the room you gain a little bit of square footage. I have taken down many doors in our house for just that reason!

Have you built or bought a sliding door for your home? I don't think this trend is going anywhere soon! Of course I'll let you know if I make one for our home. :)
